What is The Process of Plastic Pelletizing?

In the modern plastics industry, pelletizing serves as the crucial link between upstream processing and downstream manufacturing, transforming plastics of various forms into uniform, stable, and high-performance pellets. Far beyond simple melting and cutting, plastic pelletizing is a systematic engineering process integrating pre-treatment, precision plasticization, efficient filtration, and intelligent forming.

Stage 1: Raw Material Classification& Sorting

The foundation of any high-quality recycled pellet lies in the precise sorting of plastic feedstocks.

Post-Industrial Plastic Recycling

Post-industrial plastic recycling often involves the recovery and processing of plastic materials that originate directly from industrial manufacturing processes and have never reached the hands of consumers. these materials boast relatively uniform composition and low contamination levels. For such material, we recommend a simplified pre-treatment process, often requiring only crushing before pelletizing. This results in a shorter recycling route, lower cost, and final product quality approaching that of virgin material.

Post-Consumer Plastic Recycling

It commonly comes from plastic waste discarded by consumers. These materials are complex, frequently contaminated with sand, grease, labels, metals, and other plastic types. Kitech Machinery offers diverse sorting solutions-including manual sorting, air classification, floating tanks, and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy technology-to effectively remove impurities and segregate materials by type, establishing a base for subsequent washing and pelletizing.

Stage 2: Plastic Crushing& Washing

Shredding and Crushing: Large-volume plastic items (barrels, crates, bottles, film) are notoriously difficult to pelletize directly. Heavy-duty shredders and powerful crushers efficiently reduce them into uniformly sized flakes. This step not only minimizes volume for easier handling but significantly increases the material's surface area. This can improve plasticization, and consequently, higher extrusion efficiency and superior end-product quality.

Plastic Washing and Drying

Plastic washing is critical for eliminating surface contaminants. Kitech integrated washing lines typically incorporate multiple stages: pre-washing, hot washing, and rinsing. By scientifically optimizing water flow, detergent dosage, water temperature, and cycle duration, we effectively dislodge and remove stubborn impurities like labels, dirt, and oils. This is immediately followed by high-speed friction dewatering and drying systems, which rapidly reduce surface moisture to minimal levels. This prevents bubbling during pelletizing caused by residual water.

Stage 3: Extrusion & Precision Filtration

This stage is the core of plastic pelletizing, directly determining melt quality and granule characteristics.

Efficient Plasticizing Extrusion

Extruders are primarily categorized into single-screw and twin-screw models. Single-screw machines are suitable for the stable pelletizing of most common plastics. Twin-screw extruders, renowned for their exceptional mixing, shear, and self-cleaning capabilities, are particularly suited for filled compounds, modified plastics, or high-end applications demanding extreme homogeneity. Kitech Machinery extruders feature modular temperature control systems, enabling precise thermal management for each zone from the feed throat to the die head, ensuring complete and uniform plasticization of the polymer.

Precision Screen Changer

To achieve plastic melt of the highest purity, filtration via screen changers is essential post-extrusion, significantly enhancing product color, clarity, and mechanical properties. Kitech Machinery provides a comprehensive range of screen changer solutions:

1. Plate-Type Screen Changer

Featuring a single plate with double positions, it allows continuous operation by switching between two filter screens. Its large filtration area, coupled with ceramic heating for precise melt temperature control, makes it ideal for high-volume continuous production lines (e.g., for sheet, film, pipes, pelletizing).

2. Cylindrical Screen Changer

Utilizing a cylindrical screen changer (single or double), this compact design offers an exceptionally large filtration area and is particularly adept at handling high-flow rates while enabling non-stop screen changes. It is perfectly suited for large-scale, high-volume recycling operations, especially when processing heavily contaminated recycled materials (e.g., recycled PP, PE, PS, PA, ABS).

3. Auto Laser Screen Changer

This represents the pinnacle of automation-the fully automatic laser filter. It eliminates the frequent downtime and labor costs associated with manual screen changers, enabling truly continuous production. The core laser screen, crafted from durable 1.5mm thick alloy steel, boasts a significantly extended service life, thereby reducing replacement frequency and associated costs.

Stage 4: Pelletizing, Drying & Packaging

The thoroughly plasticized and filtered melt is extruded through a die and cut into uniform, tail-free, and non-agglomerating plastic pellets by our cutting systems. There are three common methods for plastic pelletizing: water ring pelletizing, strand pelletizing, and underwater pelletizing. Kitech Machinery can customize solutions based on the user's choice.

Vibration and Drying System

Freshly cut pellets immediately enter a vibration drying system, which simultaneously cools them and removes any residual surface moisture, ensuring perfectly dry granules. Accordingly, the optimal vibration drying solution must be tailored to the specific pelletizing method.

Intelligent Storage and Packaging

The dried, premium-quality pellets are conveyed via pneumatic systems or elevators to finished product silos. Finally, automated weighing and packaging systems portion them into uniform bags, ready for storage, transportation, and sale.
