Plastics Europe released "Plastics - the fast Facts 2023", which details the European plastics industry data report in 2023, revealing the latest trends in global and European plastic production, consumption and recycling. Data show that although global plastic production is still growing, the proportion of recycled plastics is increasing, indicating that the plastic circular economy is growing and developing.
Among them, the total global plastic production in 2022 is 400 million tons, an increase of about 6 million tons year-on-year. From the distribution point of view: 90.6% of them are fossil-based plastics, 8.9% come from mechanical recycling, 0.5% come from bio-based plastics, and chemical recycling and carbon capture technology account for less than 0.1%.
In the same year, Europe's plastic production was 58.7 million tons, of which more than 80% were fossil-based plastics, 12.9% came from mechanical recycling (post-consumer), 5.6% were factory waste or physical circulation of inventory materials, 1.0% came from bio-based plastics, and chemical recycling (post-consumer) accounted for only 0.2%.
Moreover, from the perspective of plastic production in various regions of the world, China is the largest plastic producer, accounting for 32% of the world's output, followed by North America and EU27+3, accounting for 17% and 14% of the output respectively. In addition, Asia is the main production area of bio-based plastics and post-consumer recycled plastics (mechanical and chemical recycling). China's post-consumer recycled plastics output is about 22 million tons, accounting for 24% of the global total. It is no exaggeration to say that China is the world's largest producer of recycled plastics and has made an important contribution to the development of the plastic circular economy.
