Twice the Size of Texas: The Pacific's Plastic Problem You Can't Ignore

Can you imagine a "new continent" floating in the remote central Pacific-an island made not by geological forces, but from plastic bottles, fishing nets, bags, and countless fragments of waste?

This lifeless "island" spans an area equivalent to two times the size of Texas.

How did it form? And how is it connected to our daily lives?

 

I. The North Pacific Garbage Patch: A Man-Made "Eighth Continent"

Located between California and Hawaii, this area lies within the Pacific subtropical gyre-a calm, windless zone with slow-moving currents that trap floating debris.

 

In 1997, American captain Charles Moore accidentally sailed into a vast "plastic soup" while returning from a yacht race. It took his boat a full week to cross this endless stretch of plastic waste.

Later named the North Pacific Garbage Patch, it has been called the "eighth continent" by environmental groups.

It spans between 1.4 to 3.43 million square kilometers-over one-third of Europe's area-with its thickest point reaching 30 meters.

 

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is often described as an "island," but in reality, it resembles a "plastic soup" composed of trillions of microplastic fragments, each under 5mm in diameter.Research confirms that approximately 94% of the 1.8 trillion plastic pieces in this area are microplastics.

II. How does the trash accumulate in the ocean?

The North Equatorial Current and Kuroshio Current carry debris from Asian coastlines eastward

The North Pacific Current pushes it across the ocean

The California Current transports it south along the American coast

Finally, a giant clockwise vortex traps the plastic, acting like a black hole that continuously collects and retains marine debris.

 

Even more alarming is its growth rate: since its discovery in 1997, the garbage patch has tripled in size. Scientists project it could grow by nine times more by 2030.

 

III. Five Ocean Gyres: Plastic "Planets" in the Sea

Sadly, the "eighth continent" is not alone.

There are five major garbage patches worldwide-in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans-over 80% of which is plastic waste: bottles, bags, utensils, film, and even sports equipment.

The North Pacific patch is the most severe, accounting for 42% of all ocean plastic.

Globally, 260 million tons of plastic are produced each year, and 10% ends up in the ocean-equivalent to one garbage truck of plastic being dumped into the sea every minute.

IV. Tracing the Source: Who Is Creating the "Eighth Continent"?

A study published in Science analyzed data from 192 coastal countries and identified the top contributors to marine plastic waste (in tons per year, 2023):

Philippines: 356,371

India: 126,513

Malaysia: 73,098

China: 70,707

Indonesia: 56,333

Myanmar: 40,000

Brazil: 37,799 (the only non-Asian country)

Vietnam: 28,221

Bangladesh: 24,640

Thailand: 22,806

 

Asian countries collectively contribute to over 75% of global marine plastic pollution.

The Philippines alone, with its 36,289 km of coastline and 4,820 rivers, accounts for 35% of the world's ocean plastic.

 

It's important to note that plastic pollution is not only tied to consumption levels but also to waste management capacity.

For example, although Malaysia's plastic usage is only one-tenth of China's, 9% of its plastic waste enters the ocean due to inadequate management-far higher than China's 0.6%.

Geography also plays a key role: island nations and regions with dense river networks and heavy rainfall are more prone to washing land-based garbage into the sea.

V. Ecological Crisis: When Plastic Enters the Food Chain

These particles pose a severe threat to marine life:

They accumulate in organisms, impairing thyroid function in mammals, spreading pathogens to seabirds, and causing digestive disorders in crustaceans.In 2021, researchers in Germany found that prolonged exposure to microplastics harms zooplankton and reduces their ability to convert CO₂ into oxygen-effect weakening the ocean's capacity to sustain life.

 

Even more alarming, microplastics have been detected in human blood, placentas, and breast milk.The plastic we discard circulates through the ocean and eventually returns to our bodies.

 

Plastic takes over 500 years to degrade. It doesn't disappear-it just breaks into smaller particles that accumulate in the food web.

A single plastic bottle discarded today may harm dozens of future generations.

 

VI. Saving the Ocean: From Awareness to Action

Despite the scale of the problem, humanity is not powerless. Key solutions include:

 

Source Control-River Barriers
Since 90% of ocean plastic comes from rivers, installing floating barriers in heavily polluted waterways (such as the Pasig River in the Philippines and the Citarum River in Indonesia) has proven highly effective.

Ocean Cleanup-Floating Systems
The Ocean Cleanup project, founded by Dutch inventor Boyan Slat, uses U-shaped barriers to capture plastic waste using natural currents. In 2023, the system recovered 18,000 tons of plastic from the North Pacific Gyre in a single operation.

Policy Action-Global Plastics Treaty
In 2022, the UN adopted a resolution to end plastic pollution, with the goal of establishing a legally binding international agreement by 2024.


The EU, Canada, and others have already implemented "extended producer responsibility" policies, making manufacturers responsible for plastic recycling and disposal.

 

The "eighth continent" is a distorted mirror reflecting the cost of human consumption.
But we created it-and we have the wisdom and determination to make it disappear.
Every breath we take is connected to the ocean; every choice we make shapes its future.
To save the ocean is to save ourselves.
